Skiing Aspen Snowmass: a first-timer's guide to the four mountains

The short version

  • One lift ticket covers all four mountains — Aspen Mountain (Ajax), Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk and Snowmass.
  • Beginners and families do best basing near Snowmass or Buttermilk; confident skiers gravitate to Ajax and Highlands.
  • Buy lift tickets in advance — walk-up window prices are the most expensive way to ski.
  • Staying ski-in/ski-out saves the most time; a short shuttle ride is the budget-friendly trade-off.

Aspen Snowmass is really four distinct ski areas under one lift ticket, each with its own personality. If it's your first trip, the hardest decision isn't whether to come — it's which mountain to point your skis at first. Here's how our team thinks about it.

Skiing Aspen Snowmass: a first-timer's guide to the four mountains — Aspen, CO

The four mountains, quickly

Aspen Mountain (Ajax) rises straight out of downtown — no green runs, all character, and a quick gondola from town. Aspen Highlands is the locals' favourite for steep terrain and the famous Highland Bowl hike. Buttermilk is the gentlest of the four and the best place to learn or find your legs. Snowmass is the giant of the group — huge, varied, and built for families, with most of the valley's ski-in/ski-out homes.

Where to base yourself

If your group is mixed-ability or travelling with kids, Snowmass Village keeps everyone close to the slopes and the ski school. If you want restaurants and nightlife at the door and don't mind a short ride to Highlands or Buttermilk, base in downtown Aspen. Either way, look for a home with boot warmers, a hot tub, and somewhere to dry gear — the details that make a ski week feel effortless.

Lift tickets & getting around

Buy lift tickets online before you arrive — the walk-up window is always the priciest option, and multi-day passes drop the per-day cost considerably. The free, frequent inter-mountain shuttle connects all four ski areas and the villages, so you don't need a car to mountain-hop. Tell us your dates and we'll have tickets and rentals sorted before you land.

When to go

For reliable snow and fewer crowds, mid-January and the weeks after the New Year holiday are the sweet spot. March brings longer, sunnier days and spring-skiing energy. Holiday weeks are magical but book up months ahead — if you're eyeing Christmas or Presidents' Week, reserve your home early.

Do I need a car in Aspen?
No. The free inter-mountain shuttle connects all four ski areas and both villages, and most homes are a short walk or ride from a stop. Many guests fly into Aspen/Pitkin County Airport and never rent a car.
Which mountain is best for beginners?
Buttermilk is the gentlest and home to the ski school, with Snowmass a close second thanks to its long, rolling green runs. Both are great places to build confidence before tackling Ajax or Highlands.
Can you arrange lift tickets and rentals?
Yes — tell us your dates and ability levels when you book and we'll have lift tickets, rentals, and lessons arranged so everything is waiting when you arrive.
